Heterozygous Hemoglobin Sherwood Forest Causing Polycythemia

Hemoglobin (Hb) Sherwood Forest is a rare high-affinity hemoglobin first described in 1977, arising from an Arg to Thr substitution at codon 104 of the beta chain. This hemoglobin variant has been identified in few individuals and has been associated with a compensatory erythrocytosis in the homozygous state. Prior scarce case reports have noted that heterozygotes for this variant are phenotypi...

David Sherwood: Invasive procedures

T he passage of a single C. elegans cell through two basement membranes to connect the worm's uterus and vulva might seem an unlikely model for tumor metastasis. But David Sherwood— who fi rst characterized the process as a post-doc in Paul Sternberg's laboratory at Caltech—thinks that the system can teach us a great deal about cell invasion events in both normal development and cancer. Sherwoo...

An unusual case of heterozygous hemoglobin S/hemoglobin Fannin-Lubbock misidentified by capillary hemoglobin electrophoresis.

A 58-year-old Hispanic man under treatment for a gangrenous toe was found to have chronic microcytic anemia and a positive sickle cell screen. High-performance liquid chromatography and isoelectric focusing electrophoresis showed that the patient is double heterozygous for hemoglobin S and hemoglobin Fannin-Lubbock. The patient does not have any manifestations of a sickling disorder. Capillary ...

Polycythemia, vascular function, and hemoglobin-nitric oxide reactions.

TO THE EDITOR: Boyer et al. (2) carefully investigate brachial artery (BA) perfusion in 15 polycythemic (P) and 13 normocythemic (N) patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, matched for age, sex, smoking, blood pressure, heart rate, lung function, and blood gases. P vs. N had not only higher mean hemoglobin concentrations ([Hb]: 17.4 vs. 14.3 g/dl) but also larger mean BA diameters ...
